The Austin Review Launch Party
January 11, 2014
The team behind The Austin Review wanted to make an impact on the local community when they released the first issue of their literary journal. They also wanted to provide an opportunity for contributing authors to read selected pieces for an audience. They're a nonprofit, so there wasn't a budget, but we went to work planning the party to shake up all other lit parties.
For starters, we used our connection at the LIVESTRONG Foundation and were permitted to host our event in their modern, beautiful space at no cost. We had food donated and catered by East Austin's trendy eateries, Mettle and WuWu Sushi. The bar was stocked with donated Austin Beerworks beer and wine purchased at cost. Aquasana was serving up varieties of infused water, too. Arrays of meats, cheeses and truffles were available for snacking.
To entice attendees to support The Austin Review, we hid 15 vouchers inside randomly selected journals that were redeemed for bags of FlatTrack Coffee or gift cards to local gems like Qui, Uchiko, Magnolia Cafe and Blue Dahlia Bistro.
During the three-hour event, The Austin Review brought in roughly $2,000 in merchandise sales and donations and successfully put copies of their new journal in the hands of many of the nearly 300 attendees.
